Vegan Sheffield
Some good places to find vegan food in Sheffield. By no means a complete list! If you know of any others, please let me know.
Sandwiches and other takeway food
Beanies (Crookesmoor Road): Vegetarian wholefoods shop with a reasonable selection of chilled wraps and pasties. Also a great shop for specialist vegan products (food and non-food) and fresh fruit and vegetables.
University of Sheffield Students' Union: The Union is fairly vegan-friendly, there's a choice of vegan sandwiches, wraps and salads in the Union shop and there are labelled vegan options on the menu in the Interval, Fusion and Bar One. The Onion Bhaji sandwiches and the Tabbouleh salad in the Eat with Us outlets are suitable for vegans.
Sheffield railway station: Whistlestop usually have two or three vegan options, usually involving felafel, houmous, spicy vegetable wraps, couscous or stuffed vine leaves. Last time I looked in M&S (Apr 08) I spotted five vegan salad pots and a vegetable samosa which appeared to be suitable for vegans.
Zooby's (Winter Gardens): Sandwich shop with vegan options on the menu (three or four choices last time I looked). They provide soya milk for tea and coffee (Fairtrade) at no extra cost and will use soya margarine on sandwiches on request. You also get to sit in the lovely Winter Gardens while you have your sandwich.
Holland and Barrett (Barker's Pool, near Fargate): Has vegan sandwiches, pasties and sausage rolls, and vegan deli slices for DIY sandwiches (grab some bread and salad from Somerfield and go and sit in the Peace Gardens for a picnic!).
Organic Heaven (Theatre Yard, Chesterfield town centre): This place isn't actually in Sheffield, but I like it a lot so it gets a mention here anyway. This is a shop selling various vegetarian/vegan products (including non-food items) and organic fruit and veg, they also have a vegetarian deli counter with several vegan options and about eight different varieties of vegan cake :-).
Restaurants and cafés
Blue Moon (next to the Cathedral): the only all-vegetarian restaurant in the city centre, and one of not very many in Sheffield as a whole. Cafeteria style, selection of hot dishes and accompanying salads, also vegan hot chocolate.
The Bohemian - vegetarian and fish cafe/restaurant in Heeley.
East One Noodle Bar (West One, city centre): Tasty fast food, Chinese/Japanese/Thai-style. Menu includes vegan soups, noodle dishes, rice dishes and Thai curry, and they'll leave the egg out of otherwise vegan dishes on request.
The Fat Cat (near Kelham Island): Friendly real-ale pub (also selling Belgian beers, which tend to be vegan) with vegan options on the food menu.
Las Iguanas (West One): Latin American-style restaurant with a couple of vegan main dishes on the menu, plus several which are vegan if you ask them to leave the cheese off. Vegan list here.
¿Que-Tal? (Glossop Road): Italian/Spanish/Mexican restaurant with separate sections on the menu for vegan starters and vegan main courses.
Royal Spice (Walkley): excellent Indian restaurant. They cook with vegetable oil and all the vegetable dishes are suitable for vegans unless they have dairy products in the description on the menu.
Sheiks (Glossop Road): Lebanese restaurant with a good selection of vegan mezze (which can be eaten as a starter or a main course) and a couple of vegan main dishes on the menu.
Wagamama (Leopold Square): Noodle bar restaurant Wagamama arrived in Sheffield in April 08. The Sheffield menu has three or four starters and main dishes that are or can be made vegan. The website has ditched its vegan list in favour of a 'dishes which can be modified to suit your dietary requirements' list, but if you ask the waiters they will bring you a paper copy of the vegan list. They also have vegan sorbet and fruit ice lollies for dessert.
(Kumquat Mae (Abbeydale Road): Vegetarian restaurant Kumquat Mae closed at the end of June 08)
Other stuff
The Dram Shop: (Commonside, nr Walkley): Off-licence with a good selection of vegan wines (labelled) and beers (not labelled, but there's a good choice if you know which ones you're looking for, including Belgian and German beers)
Henderson's Relish: Sheffield-made condiment available in pretty much any food shop or supermarket in Sheffield.
